A privileged young white woman travels to Africa, convinced she can make a difference, only to clash with a jaded local black NGO worker, sparking a passionate romance that forces them both to confront their prejudices and redefine what it means to help.
About the Film:
White Saviour Complex has been brewing in Lucy’s mind since she first travelled to Africa at the age of 19, over 25 years ago. She has been waiting for the right African writer to tell the story with, and when she found Ulan Garba Matta, she knew she was the perfect fit.
Ulan brings to the project not only her authentic lived experience growing up in Nigeria, but a wealth of experience as an NGO worker and an incredible talent for screenwriting. Together, Lucy and Ulan bring two very different perspectives to a story that uses romance and comedy to explore the complicated realities of good intentions, cultural assumptions and what it really means to help – and to be helped.
